Mary Lou (Had BCIR Surgery in August 1995)
Ulcerative Colitis was a nightmare for me. It started at fourteen. I never knew, as most patients don't, when was the next time I would need a bathroom. It got to a point where, at garage sales, I had to ask total strangers if I could use their restroom so I could at least make it to the car to go home. I could tell you where every restroom was in the mall. I knew how far it was to the next rest area on the interstate.
I had my surgery in 1995. I was in the hospital for 12 days after which I went to Florida for a week. Once I returned home, I was back at work within two days. Three weeks after I had my surgery, I was back to work.
When I think about diet, what I can and can't eat, I am overwhelmed by the variety of foods that I now enjoy as compared to what I ate when I was sick with Ulcerative Colitis. It doesn't matter to me if it takes a little longer to intubate sometimes than others. There is nothing I can't eat, unless I choose not to.
One of the things I enjoy most is dancing really close to my husband. Now, I don't have to worry about getting too close.
