Wanda (Had BCIR Surgery in August 1995)

I decided to have the BCIR because I felt that I needed something better, something that would make my life better. I needed something that would make it much easier to do the things I wanted to do every day.

I had my surgery on December 29, 1995. I was in the hospital 13 or 14 days. The staff at SouthPointe were just fantastic. They always took the time to answer any question, no matter how long it took or how stupid you thought it was...it wasn't. They even asked my husband if he had any questions. "Is there something we can answer for you, something that maybe Wanda hasn't thought of or that you think you need to know." Whatever the question, whatever the problem, they were there.

I went back to work on February 14, about six weeks after the surgery. I was limited a bit physically, but that was only for a couple of weeks. Then I went back to doing everything normally. I think the most special moment was the fact that I actually saw where the old stoma was. It was totally closed up. I was not going to have to wear that appliance again. That was a wonderful feeling.
